Angraecum Sesquipedale, famously known as the “Darwin’s Orchid” or “Christmas Orchid,” is one of the most iconic species in the orchid world, native to Madagascar. This striking monopodial orchid produces long, arching, strap-like leaves and thick aerial roots along its stem. Its flowers are large, star-shaped, and pure white with a waxy texture, designed for night pollination. The most remarkable feature is its extraordinarily long nectar spur, which can reach up to 25–35 cm, a characteristic that led Charles Darwin to predict the existence of a moth with an equally long proboscis. The blooms are highly fragrant at night, releasing a sweet, jasmine-like scent to attract pollinators. Flowering typically occurs in winter, and each inflorescence can carry several long-lasting blooms. This species thrives in warm, humid conditions with bright, indirect light and good air movement.
Note : “Angraecum sesquipedale is a natural epiphytic orchid species featuring strap-like leaves that may develop characteristic black spotting or speckling on mature foliage, a natural trait observed in many plants of this species. It produces large, star-shaped, fragrant white flowers with its iconic long nectar spur and thrives in warm, humid conditions with bright filtered light.”
