The Cattleya Schilleriana, often referred to as Consul Schiller's Cattleya, is a highly desirable, small-growing epiphytic or lithophytic orchid species native to the coastal eastern regions of Brazil, and is now considered rare or extinct in its natural habitat. This bifoliate Cattleya (meaning it has two leaves per pseudobulb) is treasured for its highly fragrant, waxy, and long-lasting flowers, which typically appear in the spring and early summer on a short inflorescence bearing up to six blooms. The striking, approximately 4-inch flowers feature sepals and petals in unusual, earthy tones of tan, olive-brown, or mahogany, often heavily overlaid with darker, exotic spots; however, the most captivating feature is the broad, flat lip, which is dramatically marked with rich magenta or purple striations against a white or pale base, creating a brilliant, contrasting focal point. Growing compactly to about 10 inches tall, its robust nature and spectacular, glossy blooms make it a prized possession for orchid enthusiasts who can provide it with intermediate to warm conditions and bright, filtered light.
