From Bahia and Espírito Santo in eastern Brazil, Cattleya tenebrosa (also listed as Laelia tenebrosa) opens three or four flowers up to 16 cm across on a spike about 30 cm tall in spring. Typical flowers have copper-brown petals around a magenta-purple lip and a spicy scent, and the colour varies from plant to plant.
You receive a blooming-size plant in a 7 cm pot of sphagnum moss, sent without flowers, spikes or buds; our photos show the species in flower. Best for growers who can give it bright light, which is what brings Cattleyas into bloom.
