Cycnoches Warscewiczii, also frequently known by the older synonym Cycnoches Loddigesii, is an intriguing medium-sized epiphytic orchid species native to the tropical lowlands of Central America and northern South America. Commonly referred to as a Swan Orchid, this species is celebrated for its sexual dimorphism, meaning the flowers are distinctly different depending on their gender; the more commonly seen male flowers feature elongated, slender sepals and petals that curl backward, giving them a spider-like appearance and a greenish-yellow or brownish color, while the rarer, larger female flowers are typically more rounded and pale green. This deciduous orchid grows from stout, jointed pseudobulbs that drop their leaves in the winter, requiring a strict cool and dry rest period to ensure flowering on pendulous inflorescences in the late summer and fall. The flowers are notable for their sweet and complex fragrance, often described as having hints of vanilla and spice, making this species a fascinating addition for growers who can provide warm, humid conditions during the active growing cycle.
